Hi Chris,
Its nice
to hear from you, I have just retired and I am loving it so if you do
manage a reunion I am available and just to show my sincerity I will
give up a visit to Pride Park to watch Derby play for it. We only won
once last year and Dorothy and I missed that game.
Have you
heard from any of the permanent staff as well as me ?

alighted from the train at
Troon, the green army buses then delivered their cargo of children to
the'spider' at Cassell's Company.
Hairy shirts, huge white china mugs, bulled boots and early rises were the
order of the day. I have come to appreciate those hard times so much,we
are and will always be soldier's,we have resilience and honour and

Clame
to fame (Not that it did me any good !): Best recruit Autumn intake
1966. (There were three of us and we had to draw cards for it, I won !)
A
story about Sgt Muir.
He
was the first to greet us one rainy afternoon in Sep.
1966 as we got of the transport from the station. Now I´m 6ft 5in but
when your just 16 years old and this guy stands infront of you - 5ft
and nothing, or so it seemed, wearing a kilt, the first one I
had seen - looking up your nose and shouting at you and you
have just spent the entire day on the train - I was up from Somerset -
you begin to wonder what the hell you have let your self in for.
Well
16 years later, on the Falklands Jul. 1982, I was the
rear link Sgt with 1 Q O HLDRS and was asked if I would take the Anti
Tank Pl. down to South George for 6 weeks - which turnd into 12 as they
did not have any ships at the turn round point to pick us up. I had a
Pte. called Muir and one day I told him my first Pl. Sgt was a Sgt Muir
at JTR Troon and he said that was his Dad. When they dropped the mail
in for us he had a letter from his Dad who sent his regards and yes he
could remember me.

21 Platoon then A Coy.. made J/Sgt. I know Jim Mahon - a big lad from
Carlisle. I think he started in Sigs but transferred to the
RCT - could be other way around though!! I remember
Dave Higgs - RE all round sporty type and basketball
specialist. Franny McKeenan - another RE, a great sense of
humour and closet tough guy.
From our gang I would like to get in touch with:
Al Millar - from Stirling RE - looked about 12 years
old.
Jim O'Niel - Dundee RE - a tough guy.
Pete Fielding RA - another closet boxer!! Dave (the Eb) Sennett
RE - from Keighley - severely fast cross country runner.Kenny
Drummond - GH. Another hard boy from Stockton I
think. Made J/CSM A Coy.

I have forgotten.
My memories are of Cassels coy, staff sgt Green (signals) sgt mcmullen
paddy (royal inniskilling) both were my platoon sgt's. The C/O was LT
col
PL Nicholson. I passed out then went into Goodbody coy, memories are
vague now, I think my platoon commander was Lieutenant Turner and my
company commander was definitely Major Rogers.
There is a chap posting as Pete Haywood I think he was in my platoon but
his dates do not line up.
The lads I do remember are as follows : Arthur (lurch) Hannon, Michael

that sticks in my mind about Troon was the double bunks, and being on the short

getting out of bed in the mornings and making up the bed pack too. Also like

I went to Goodbodys

we had as JNCOs, but we had Sgt Ron Upton R Sigs and a Sgt Garrick REME.
I left Troon in 1970 December pass off and joined my Regiment 4th Royal
Tank Regiment in January 1971. Landed in RAF Aldergrove in August 1971 and
the first person I meet is a Dvr Bars (not sure of spelling)who had been the

After the first term and moved into Murray Coy. for trade training. I finished
my time there as the junior C/Sgt. and mustered to 4 squadron RCT in 2 Div

Done my time in the

junk. They are "The Junior Tradesmens Regiments Challenge" shield for cross
