I still remember the freezing cold day when we alighted from the train at
Troon, the green army buses then delivered their cargo of children to
the'spider' at Cassell's Company.

Hairy shirts, huge white china mugs, bulled boots and early rises were the
order of the day. I have come to appreciate those hard times so much,we
are and will always be soldier's,we have resilience and honour and guts.I
hope that someone may have the platoon photo, other trooners I remember
were, Paddy Hendry,John Geany and Ernie Lovell, from London.Ernie and his

Clame to fame (Not that it did me any good !): Best recruit Autumn intake 1966. (There were three of us and we had to draw cards for it, I won !)

A story about Sgt Muir.

He was the first to greet us one rainy afternoon in Sep. 1966 as we got of the transport from the station. Now I´m 6ft 5in but when your just 16 years old and this guy stands infront of you - 5ft and nothing, or so it seemed, wearing a kilt, the first one I had seen - looking up your nose and shouting at you and you have just spent the entire day on the train - I was up from Somerset - you begin to wonder what the hell you have let your self in for.

Well 16 years later, on the Falklands Jul. 1982, I was the rear link Sgt with 1 Q O HLDRS and was asked if I would take the Anti Tank Pl. down to South George for 6 weeks - which turnd into 12 as they did not have any ships at the turn round point to pick us up. I had a Pte. called Muir and one day I told him my first Pl. Sgt was a Sgt Muir at JTR Troon and he said that was his Dad. When they dropped the mail in for us he had a letter from his Dad who sent his regards and yes he could remember me.
Jim Bradley yes RASC 1963 1965 I was in intake 5 (yes 5!) in the autumn of 1963

"Gnr Robinson, Autum Intake 66. Goodbody Company, Sigs Training.
S/Sgt Green always went on parade without his teeth, the rumour was that they moved in unison with his shouting on the parade ground.
Cpl Hicks, was it, who did the Sigs Training and also coached some of us in Calculus and Logarithams".
Bryan goes on to tell a funny tale of a  particular lad who had a bit of a
set to with a smaller lad and ended up the worse for it  after pushing him passed the point of no return..

I served at JTR Troon from January 1965 to about April 1966. in RASC then RCT

The Platoon staff consisted of Lt Muir. R.Signals, Sgt Partridge R Artillery,Sgt Muir. Queens Own Hldrs.

My first memories of JTR were walking into the billets of 10 Platoon and introducing myself to a fair headed kid in the Royal Signals, Collin Marsh. in 1969 I met Collin again on a flight to Bahrain when I was enroute to 90 Squadron RCT in Sharjah. I wonder where he is now.

I left Cassel Coy. After the first term and moved into Murray Coy. for trade training. I finished my time there as the junior C/Sgt. and mustered to 4 squadron RCT in      2 Div Regt RCT (Bunde) along with Terry Goss who left the army there to move into the civilian life as an ex-pat. Another guy from about the same time was Bill Bishop ex RHF who transfered to the RCT and has just finished his service in the Fife Fire and Rescue Service.

Done my time in the mob till February 1988 and now work full time for the Army Cadet Force in Glasgow where I found a couple of the old JTR Troon Sports Shields in a box of junk. They are "The Junior Tradesmens Regiments Challenge" shield for cross country running and "The Inter Regimental Competition Troon-Rhyl" football shield. I am just giving them a temporary home till they find a place of pride in some deserving location or collection of JTR memorabilia.

One of your members, Jim Ross, had asked on your site about Dave Mercer. The last time I saw him he Was the RSM at 154 Transport Regt RCT (V) in Yorkhill, Glasgow about 1984/85.

I doubt if I will be remembered by anybody out there but if so they are welcome to contact me.
