Hi I have some realy good memories from my time at jtr troon. right from the moment I arrived in the railway station with if I remember with a chap called Bagley he was from norwich and I was straight out of the fens this seemed at first like another world, and the young locals we met as we left the station made it clear we were the outsiders. but I went on to enjoy my stay(well most of it)

Hi Chris, I was at Roberts Barracks at Osnabruck. They had stables and some horses there run by some 17/21 Lancers. They started up a riding school and so I joined as I was not a great sportsman, instead of sports we used to go down there and learn to ride!! Typical of the army types, as a short ass I was given this bloody enormous white horse, I can still even remember her name, Carolla. One afternoon we were out for a hack in the woods and the bloody thing took off with me, managed to stop it just before arriving at big ditch and hedge. She turned round and was just going to walk back, so I gave her a good kicking with my DR Boots and made her gallop back to join the rest. After that I had a good time at the riding school, another big plus was that they had a private club there, and we were allowed to use that also. Magic.

Hi Chris,
One of the most mind numbing jobs I did on jankers was at RE Trg Camp at Hove. I was sent out to cut the grass round the block, tools were Jack knife, ruler and thread. I had to cut the blades of grass 2 inches long and make bundles of 50 blades tied up with thread then stack them in piles of 20. That went on for 2 hours. Also remember being done for being drunk on parade, this was the morning after I had a good night in one of the local pubs that served the real scrumpy, it went down a treat. I felt great in the morning, got up and went to the cookhouse for breakfast, the minute I had my cup of tea I was off again, got drunk twice on one night out and paid for it twice in different ways. But we live and learn, I think they had a good laugh about it cos the OC dealt with it and I got off pretty light.

     All the best Ian.

Ok Ian re Jankers Question

Lets see if we can compile a list of tedious tasks for Jankers my own contributions will be

Painting the chain on the fence at the gaurdroom with watercolour paintbrush
Sweeping the square with a toothbrush
Counting the sugar grains in a spoonfull of sugar
Peeling the Potato Peelings
Straitening the wire wool in the cookhouse
Polishing the Brass Artilliary Gun with a cotton bud

It will be interesting to see if there was a trend in different regiments

All the best Chris

Hi,
Just thinking back, apretty long way, I remember jankers, although I didnt do them that often. But, I didi them and also supervised later on, but the usual thing then was tidying up round the spider, these were usually for OC and CO's inspection. Picking up dog ends and sweety papers and raking the border. Then some bright spark thought to brighten it all up by planting flowers, not just any old flower, but plastic ones, it looked pretty funny those single roses and tulips sticking up about every 18 inches. After the inspection they were gathered up and put away until the next time they were needed. Does anyone remember other things done for jankers.
Happy memories really. All the best. Ian.

Hi all
I stumbled across this site a few days ago , what a site !!! well done chris . I joined JTR in september 1970 and passed out in april ( i think )1972 , I have nothing but good memories of the time i spent there i have special memories of SGT Wiltshire a briliant person and a teriffic NCO , I can still remember the first time he caught me out at (mail call) after calling for a number of juniors to collect their mail i heard MCCARTHY shouted down the spider --sir! came my reply i doubled to the office where Sgt wiltshire whith a big smile on his face handed me a letter saying give this to ------- would you . And i had to say yessir! ( trying not to swear ) and double back to the room and hand it over to the guy it belonged to . It was done in fun and was accepted as that by myself ( and everyone else who heard the wind up ). If you read this Sarge i would like to say thanks for the memories mate .
                        best of luck all
