Hi guys
Just an update to let you know that one of our ex trooners has sent me through a copy of the regimental magazine from 1967
and also a copy of the Mustering parade program for the same year
Thanks malcolm I will be getting that up on the site as soon as possible
Keep the site growing guys
As a goodbody we only got to practice with the L/rovers, but I remember getting my knuckles rapped by an over zealous instuctor. Cant complain too much as I went on to be a B1 Driver and drove every thing the regiment had and a few more besides.
I seem to recall that he was instucting someone and said straight on at the island and they did lol, 3 lads in the back as well.

Hi all
I stumbled across this site a few days ago , what a site !!! well done chris . I joined JTR in september 1970 and passed out in april ( i think )1972 , I have nothing but good memories of the time i spent there i have special memories of SGT Wiltshire a briliant person and a teriffic NCO , I can still remember the first time he caught me out at (mail call) after calling for a number of juniors to collect their mail i heard MCCARTHY shouted down the spider –sir! came my reply i doubled to the office where Sgt wiltshire whith a big smile on his face handed me a letter saying give this to ——- would you . And i had to say yessir! ( trying not to swear ) and double back to the room and hand it over to the guy it belonged to . It was done in fun and was accepted as that by myself ( and everyone else who heard the wind up ). If you read this Sarge i would like to say thanks for the memories mate .
best of luck all

Hi,
Just thinking back, apretty long way, I remember jankers, although I didnt do them that often. But, I didi them and also supervised later on, but the usual thing then was tidying up round the spider, these were usually for OC and CO’s inspection. Picking up dog ends and sweety papers and raking the border. Then some bright spark thought to brighten it all up by planting flowers, not just any old flower, but plastic ones, it looked pretty funny those single roses and tulips sticking up about every 18 inches. After the inspection they were gathered up and put away until the next time they were needed. Does anyone remember other things done for jankers.
Happy memories really. All the best. Ian.
Ok Ian re Jankers Question
Lets see if we can compile a list of tedious tasks for Jankers my own contributions will be
Painting the chain on the fence at the gaurdroom with watercolour paintbrush
Sweeping the square with a toothbrush
Counting the sugar grains in a spoonfull of sugar
Peeling the Potato Peelings
Straitening the wire wool in the cookhouse
Polishing the Brass Artilliary Gun with a cotton bud
It will be interesting to see if there was a trend in different regiments
All the best Chris
Hi Chris,
One of the most mind numbing jobs I did on jankers was at RE Trg Camp at Hove. I was sent out to cut the grass round the block, tools were Jack knife, ruler and thread. I had to cut the blades of grass 2 inches long and make bundles of 50 blades tied up with thread then stack them in piles of 20. That went on for 2 hours. Also remember being done for being drunk on parade, this was the morning after I had a good night in one of the local pubs that served the real scrumpy, it went down a treat. I felt great in the morning, got up and went to the cookhouse for breakfast, the minute I had my cup of tea I was off again, got drunk twice on one night out and paid for it twice in different ways. But we live and learn, I think they had a good laugh about it cos the OC dealt with it and I got off pretty light.
All the best Ian.
When I was stationed in Osnabruck I was beginning to like jankers
OH no Sorry I mean Bratters
Oh happy days
Were any of you stationed at mercer barracks and had a go on they mad horses that were just over the hill
chris
Hi Chris, I was at Roberts Barracks at Osnabruck. They had stables and some horses there run by some 17/21 Lancers. They started up a riding school and so I joined as I was not a great sportsman, instead of sports we used to go down there and learn to ride!! Typical of the army types, as a short ass I was given this bloody enormous white horse, I can still even remember her name, Carolla. One afternoon we were out for a hack in the woods and the bloody thing took off with me, managed to stop it just before arriving at big ditch and hedge. She turned round and was just going to walk back, so I gave her a good kicking with my DR Boots and made her gallop back to join the rest. After that I had a good time at the riding school, another big plus was that they had a private club there, and we were allowed to use that also. Magic.
Ian.
Hi Ian,
Are You and Robert Related by any chance?
Anyway I thought you might like to see an image of the camp at Osnabruck as they are going to be knocking it down I hear

Hi Just gaining up on a few memories.
I can remember parading at the guard room at staff parade 2200 hrs (Was there a BELL Rang at that time?) in Best Kit to be told to get away and be back in 10 minutes in PT Kit – Red Vest, Brown Sandshoes, Grey woolen socks suitably rolled down and Blue Shorts then to be told to parade back in 10 minutes dressed in Denim Fatigue Dress.
Those who got the Cookhouse cleaning duties didnt have to parade at staff parade. Guess what we all volunteered for at the 1800 hr Parade.
Only the lucky few were successful
My number 23917918 and served at JTR from 6th June 1962 to 13 Sept 1964
In That time I did a lot of Jankers !!! I wasnt classed as a goody two shoes more as a little rake. But I loved every minute of it – Cultybraggan as well. Does anyone remember the Dances and Morrisons Academy (The Girls Finishing School) in Creiff.
Those Drainpipes were HIGH!!!!
The rock climbing at Devils Cauldron helped Thanks Sgt French & Larry Dewhirst.
Regards All
Any one recall RSM Abbott, he turned up at my Regiment, 25 RA, as a QM.
As a B1 driver I was involved with prepping all the Vehicles for a full parade for the new man, as you do, and as I walked across to the MT point to collect another one a voice awoke me from my revelry. There I was black and greasy from head to toe and the bugger still recognised me.
He was a very well respected Officer from all ranks and did a great job for us.
Great website. I struggle to remember what happened last week never mind back to 1962.!!!!. Just looking at some of the permanent staff names such as Sgt Mulligan and Sgt Smith, Lt French brings back bitter sweet memories. My number is 23949639 (that’s something you never forget). I remember learning to drive in a 1 tonner and crashing it through a wall in Maybole. Happy days!!
Hi Bill so it was you who made all the gates in ayrshire then
I had an instructor Mr Fowler who took us to the gailes camp wher there were roads but no camp next to jtr
and he asked if anyone had driven before well I had driven a few things though I was only 16 My brother seven years older than me had shown me the rudiments of driving
So He said ok you first, well I can remember the spring on that bloody clutch to this day It must have been a suspension spring Talk about Kangaroo petrol That land rover leapfroged for about half a mile before I managed to stop it.
Gave my pals quite a laugh though even Mr Fowler was laughing
Turned out he gave me the best advice a driver could get
He said to me one day…Remember son…If you drive like a fool and you meet a fool coming the other way you’ve had it
Good advice
All the best you guys
Chris
Hi
I would like to hear from anybody from 1967 intake, I moved from training into Murray Company. I played for the regimental football team which was considered at the time the best so far, we got to semi finals of Junior Army Cup in 1968. Met some great guys just wondering how any one of them got on in Life.
I remember a scots lad Bill Geddes from Perth I think who I was good friends with.
All the Best
